Top 5 Things Every Actor Should Know About Submitting To Reps (with Ben Jordan from Headline Talent)

  1. You get what you pay (submit) for. A cold submission will likely be met with the same temperature. Seek out referrals and a chance to actually meet the person.

  2. There must be a personal connection. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable having this person over for a dinner party, then walk away.

  3. Know who you are submitting to you and what they actually cover. My company doesn’t cover commercials, and I’ll immediately stop reading/listening when you bring them up.

  4. Don’t lie about your referral. We will check. We will also ask that person that referred you why they didn’t reach out to us directly. Also, you can’t use someone we have never met as your referral.

  5. Take all your meetings. Beware of reps that asks you to cancel the rest of your meetings. You want to hear all of the different approaches and be able to ask them all the same questions in order to compare their answers.

  6. Bonus: We are in the middle of a pandemic. No matter what anyone is saying, things are nowhere near to being back to “normal”. No rep is going to be able to properly develop your career right now. That doesn’t mean that you can’t be signed and they can’t get you a few appointments, but your expectations have to be in tune with these times.
