The Teen Filmmaking Experience with Matt Newton

Ages 13-17. Learn the ins and outs of filmmaking in this popular summer film bootcamp taught by head MN teacher and teen on set coach Matt Newton (“Blue Bloods” “Jessica Jones,” “Orange is the New Black.”).    Students will write, direct, act in, edit, and present their own short film in the theme that they choose (past themes included “Stranger Things,” “Marvel,” “Saturday Night Live,” and “Horror”).  Over the 5 days of this fast paced intensive, students will create a 3-4 minute short film from concept to finish with a very “hands on”, practical approach, and will be using professional lighting, camera, and sound, and while also learning important elements of filmmaking including shotlists, directing, acting, location scouting, camera angle, lighting, editing, basic color correction, as well as working on the crew (sound, DP, gaffer, key grip, script supervisor).   Matt will work closely with each student to learn the essential elements of filmmaking, both from an acting standpoint, and a director/writer standpoint. At the end we present their films on a big screen, and then hand out awards for top categories, including Best Writer/Director, as well as Best Actor/Actress.   Limited to 10 students, each student will leave with a finished version of their film, a ton of film set knowledge, and a new group of young collaborators.

What past students have said…

“Matt’s filmmaking camp was the perfect place to stretch my muscles as an aspiring director. Being able to step into a passionate environment with other kids interested in filmmaking and Matt’s guidance was invaluable (and super fun!)…and felt like being on a real set - we were battling sun, batteries, continuity…the same things I deal with on a professional set now! A couple months after the camp, I made my first short film which premiered at the Big Apple Film Festival. I’m currently in post-production for my fifth film. I will always be grateful to Matt for my first filmmaking experience and for creating an amazing environment for me to learn in!”
